Mean/Kind ... a concert show

Mean/Kind ist ein Performance-Projekt, das aus einer Reihe von Medleys hervorgegangen ist, die der Zug Show Choir bereits als eigenständige musikalische Suiten vorbereitet hatte. Bei der Suche nach einem Thema, das die drei Sammlungen (Lieder von „Wicked“, „West Side Story“ und „Fiddler on the Roof“) miteinander verbindet, wurde klar, dass in jeder der Shows, aus denen unsere Musik stammt, die Charaktere mit irgendeiner Art von Problem zu kämpfen haben: Mobbing und Akzeptanz.

In „Wicked“ zum Beispiel wird Elphaba von ihrer Familie, ihren Freunden, ihrer Schule und ihrer Gemeinde abgelehnt, nicht nur weil sie grün ist, sondern auch weil sie über diese enormen magischen Kräfte verfügt, durch die sich andere bedroht fühlen. In West Side Story haben wir eine Gruppe von Leuten aus Puerto Rico, die in New York leben. Sie werden von den Jets (der rivalisierenden Bande) abgelehnt, die interessanterweise ebenfalls aus Einwanderern besteht. Sie kamen jedoch ein Jahrzehnt früher aus Europa an und halten sich für „akzeptabler“. In Fiddler on the Roof gibt es eine Dorfgruppe bestehend aus ukrainisch-russischen Juden, die zur Migration gezwungen werden. Darüber hinaus lehnt unser Held im Musical, der geliebte Tevye seine Tochter traurig ab, als sie beschließt, außerhalb des Glaubens ihrer Familie zu heiraten.

 

Da viele unserer Darsteller in verschiedenen Ländern gelebt haben, hielten wir das Thema Akzeptanz, die Überwindung von Mobbing und Belästigung sowie das Lernen, wie man sich einfügt, für relevant, sowohl für unsere Darsteller als auch für unsere Gemeinschaft im Allgemeinen. Jeder weiß, wie es ist, das Gefühl zu haben, nicht „dazuzupassen“ … oder wenn man sich neu fühlt … oder wenn man abgelehnt und gemobbt wird. Einige von uns sind auch auf der anderen Seite der Gleichung gestanden und mussten Mitgefühl und Verantwortung lernen.

In Zeiten wie diesen, in denen Menschen mit unterschiedlichen politischen Ansichten und Problemen bei der Gleichstellung der Geschlechter zu kämpfen haben, wollten wir in diesem Rahmen ein Stück Performance-Kunst schaffen und auf einer bestimmten Ebene einige der Probleme hervorheben, mit denen Menschen jeden Tag arbeiten. Nachdem wir das gemeinsame Thema dieser scheinbar sehr unterschiedlichen Musicals (Akzeptanz überwindendes Mobbing) erkannt hatten, war es eine einfache, unterhaltsame Entscheidung, Taylor Swifts beliebten Hit „Mean“ hinzuzufügen.Auch David Friedmans schöne Losung „We can be kind“ schien die beste Schlussbemerkung zu sein.

 

Mean/Kind ist ein Konzert – allerdings ist es wie ein Musical zusammengestellt. Es verfügt über Requisiten, Lichtdesign, Kostümelemente, Inszenierung und verschiedene Charaktere. Aber wie ein Konzert verliert es auch seine 4. Wand und spricht das Publikum zeitweise direkt an. Für einige Songs haben wir sowohl Backing-Tracks als auch Live-Musiker orchestriert. Wir wurden inspiriert, etwas anderes zu machen, nachdem wir jahrelang von Covid aufgehalten wurden, also haben wir auch mit Multimedia experimentiert und einige der Songs originell arrangiert.

 

Mean/Kind is a performance project that grew from a set of medleys that the Zug Show Choir had already been preparing as independent musical suites.  In looking for a theme which ties the 3 collections together (songs from Wicked, West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof) it was clear that in each of the shows where our music comes from, characters are struggling with or working through some kind of bullying and acceptance problem.  

 

For example, in Wicked Elphaba is being rejected by her family, friends-- her school and community, not only for being green, but also for having these tremendous magical powers that others feel threatened by.  In West Side Story, we have a group of people from Puerto Rico living in New York. They are rejected by The Jets (the rival gang), which interestingly is also formed of immigrants.  However, they arrived a decade earlier from Europe..and consider themselves more "acceptable".   In Fiddler on the Roof  there is a village group composed of Ukrainian/Russian Jewish people who are forced to migrate.  Additionally, our hero in the musical, the beloved Tevye, sadly rejects his daughter when she chooses at to marry outside of her family's faith. 

 

As many of our performers have lived in different countries, we thought the theme of acceptance, overcoming bullying and harassment as well as learning how fitting in were pertinent, both for our performers and our community in general.  Everyone knows what it's like to feel like you don't "fit in" ... or when you feel new ... or when you've been rejected and bullied.  Some of us have also come out on the other side of the equation and had to learn compassion and responsibility.   

 

In times such as these, where people are struggling with different political viewpoints and gender equality problems, we wanted to create a piece of performance art within this framework and can highlight some of the problems people are working with every day at some level.    After realizing the common theme between these seemingly very different musicals (acceptance-overcoming bullying) adding in Taylor Swift's popular hit "Mean", was an easy fun choice.  Also, David Friedman's beautiful solution "We can be kind" seemed like the best note to end on.  

 

Mean/Kind is a concert - however, it's been put together like a musical. It has props, a lighting design, costume elements, staging, and different characters. But like a concert, it also loses its 4th wall and addresses the audience directly at times.  We have orchestrated backing tracks as well as live musicians for some of the songs.  We were inspired to do something different after years of being held up by coved, so we've also experimented with multi-media as well as having some original arrangements of some of the songs.

Hanns Zöllner, Co-Director

Producer and director of English language musical theatre in the Zug/Zurich area. He is a CH accredited Chorleiter from Vienna where he got his music education at the Konservatorium der Stadt Wien. He participated in workshops with Bayoork Lee (musical acting), Sam Bucher (method acting), John Cumberlidge (NODA workshop). His focus has been on Sondheim’s works and musical cabaret in the style of NYC shows as well as directing and conducting the Zug Show Choir. Productions include the musicals The Fantasticks, Snoopy!, Working, Into the Woods, Company, Assassins, Chess, The Secret Garden and various musical cabaret shows. He has been residing in Unteraegeri/Zug for many years.

Kate Michaels, Co-Director

Kate received her voice and acting training in San Francisco, California and in Graz, Austria. She was also the 1994 recipient of the Irma Cooper Scholarship for opera studies in Austria and received the Local Sacramento Best Actor award. She performs as an actor and is a cross-over genre soloist for both classical, jazz, and musical theater. She is also a director, music educator, voice teacher and works in artist management and production. Musical direction credits include Fiddler on the Roof, Grease, Carnival, Oliver, Mary Poppins and Godspell. She has been published in Classical Singer magazine and is a long-time member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing as well as the Swiss Actors Union.

Myrtha Schuler, Choreographer

Myrtha has always been an avid musical lover. She joined the ETGZ in 1997 for the production of Kiss Me, Kate and has since then appeared in various productions including Sondheim’s Company, Into the Woods and Assassins, Oklahoma!, Inside Out, Oliver!, Guys and Dolls, The Sound of Music, CHESS and The Secret Garden. She is trained in singing and various dancing styles, choreographed several ETGZ and Zug Show Choir shows and was co-producer and choreographer for Oliver!. She is also keen on classical music performing with the choir Audite Nova, Zug. Myrtha is thrilled to be in the Directorial Team with Kate and Hanns to produce this wonderfully witty and meaningful concept Show “Mean/Kind”.
